1. Position 1 on the left hand only.
2. With the right thumb and index, grab the left far little finger string a short distance from the left hand, and wrap it once clockwise around the left ring and little fingers. Then wrap it once more, clockwise, around just the left ring finger. Release right thumb and index, letting the string dangle from between the left ring and little fingers.
3. With the right thumb and index, grab the two strings on the back of the left ring finger, and lift them off the ring finger. Be careful not to pull the little finger loops off at the same time. Draw the former ring finger loops a little ways to the right and drop.
4. With the right thumb and index, grab the left far little finger string, a bit farther along than the point where the former ring finger loops hang hang from it. Pass this string to the left, between the left thumb and index finger, and let it drop, so that it sits below the original left thumb loop.
5. With the right thumb and index, grab the upper (original) left near thumb string, a short distance from the left hand. Lift it off the thumb, and pass it across the palm, and then to the left, between the left ring and little fingers. Wrap it once clockwise around the left ring and little fingers, and then once again around just the left ring finger, and let it drop, so that it hangs down the palm from between the left ring and little fingers.
6. Repeat step 3. Draw out the former ring finger loops about half as far as you did in step 3.
7. With the right thumb and index, grab the two lower strings on the back of the left little finger, and lift them off the finger, past the two upper loops, and drop them on the palmar side of the hand.
8. With the right thumb and index, grab the left near thumb string, and lift the left thumb loop off the thumb. Turning the the left thumb toward you, pass it back into its original loop in the opposite direction. Pass the string held by the right thumb and index across the left palm, and then to the left between the left ring and little fingers, and clockwise around the back of the left little finger, and then drop it.
9. With the right thumb and index, grab the two lower loops on the back of the left little finger, and lift them off the little finger, past the upper little finger loop, and drop them on the palmar side of the hand.
10. Pass the right little finger, from below and from the far side, into the left little finger loop, past the point where a double loop loops over it, and pick up the left far little finger string. Similarly, pass the right thumb, from below and from the near side, into the left thumb loop, past the point where another loop loops over it, and pick up the left near thumb string. Separate the hands gently.
According to [K. Haddon 1912], this represents a female ptarmigan near the left hand, and a male ptarmigan, with his tail pointing up, near the middle.
To dissolve the figure without tangles, release left little finger and right thumb loops, and separate hands slowly and gently.
