1. Position 1.
2. With right index, pick up left palmar string from below.
3. Insert left thumb into left little finger from below, and return with near little finger string.
4. Insert left index into left thumb loop from below, and return with far thumb string (not the palmar string).
5. With the right thumb and index, grab the two left near thumb strings, close to the left thumb, and withdraw the left hand from all its loops. Keeping the loops pinched between the right thumb and index, let the former left thumb-little-finger loop hang from the right thumb, and the former left thumb-index loop hang from the right index.
6. Pass the left thumb to the right into the loop hanging from the right thumb, and the left little finger to the right into the loop hanging from the right index. Release the loops held by the right thumb and index.
7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 twice.
8. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
9. Release right index loop.
10. Caroline extension, with the left hand only.
Some manual arrangement of the strings may be necessary to give the figure the proper zigzag appearance.
These instructions are from [Davidson 1941], figure VII ("Baby Being Born").
