Two Men Walking Down a Valley

The method is my own reconstruction. It differs in one step from figure 34 of [Maude 2001] ("Ibiya 1, two inland lagoon fish").

1. Opening A.

2. Pass thumbs over index loops, and into little finger loops from below. Return with near little finger strings.

3. Insert index fingers into thumb loops from below, and return with far thumb strings (not the palmar strings). Release thumb loops.

4. Insert thumbs from below into lower index loops, then pass them away under little finger loops, pick up far little finger string, and return through index loops. Release little finger loops.

5. Insert little finger from above into upper index loops, and pick up upper near index string. Release upper loop from indexes.

6. Release remaining loop from indexes, but do not pull tight. Let the dangling former index loops hang loosely until the final step of the figure.

7. Insert indexes from above into thumb loops, and pick up near thumb string. Release thumb loops.

8. Pass thumbs under index loops, insert into little finger loops from below, and pick up near little finger strings. Then insert thumbs from below into index loops, and pick up near index strings.

9. Caroline extension.

To duplicate Roth's illustration, rest the middle of the figure on a surface, and gently exchange the two upright central loops, by pushing one loop through the other (if Opening A was done in the normal right-handed manner, push the left loop through the right loop).

Roth indicates that three or four men (presumably represented by three or four central loops) can be made in a similar manner. Since he provides no illustration of this, it's anyody's guess what these figures might look like, or how they're made.
