1. Opening A.
2. Insert thumbs, middle, ring, and little fingers into index loops from below, and let index loops slip down to the wrists.
3. Insert little fingers from above into thumb loops, and return with near thumb strings.
4. Insert indexes from above into little finger loops, and with a half-twist toward you and up, pick up near little finger strings.
5. With the right thumb and index, grab the left near index string and left near thumb string, where they meet on the palm of the left hand near the base of the left ring finger. Withdraw the left hand from all loops except the wrist loop, and keeping the right thumb and index pinched together, let the former left thumb loop hang from the right thumb, and the former left index loop hang from the right index.
6. Insert left little finger from below (toward the left) into loop hanging from right thumb, and pick up the hanging loop's near string. Pass the left thumb away from you over this string, and insert it from the far side and from below (toward the left) into the loop hanging from the right index, and pick up its far string. Turn the left thumb up, being careful not to catch the new left little finger strings, and release the loops held by the right thumb and index.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 on the other hand.
8. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
9. With the right thumb and index, grab the left near wrist string, lift it up over the left thumb, and place it across the left palm. Then grab this string, the left near index string, and the left near thumb string, at the point where they all meet near the base of the left ring finger, and withdraw the left hand from all its loops. Keeping the three strings pinched between the right thumb and index, let the former left thumb loop hang from the right thumb, and the former left index loop hang from the right index, with the former left near wrist string hanging between them.
10. Insert the left thumb and little finger from below (toward the left) into the loop hanging from the left thumb. Then turn the left thumb back toward the right, and insert it from above into the loop hanging from the right index, and pick up the far string of the loop. Release the strings held by the right thumb and index.
11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 on the other hand.
12. Insert indexes into thumb loops from below, and return with far thumb strings (not the palmar strings).
13. Caroline extension.
These instructions are from [Jenness 1920], figure XII ("The Sun and the Moon").
Steps 5 and 6 of this figure are the same as the fourth step of [Jayne 1906]'s figure "Three Stars." Steps 9 and 10 of this figure are the same as the eighth step of "Three Stars."
For a very similar figure (but with different string crossings), see the Maori Kotiro-Punarua.
