Po; Darkness / E-ke-pe-ki; Ace of Spades

1. Opening A.

2. Insert thumbs into index loops from below, then pass them over far index strings and into little finger loops from below. Return with near index and near little finger strings, and release little fingers.

3. Pass little fingers over far index strings, and insert into thumb loops from below. Return with (double) far thumb strings, and release thumbs.

4. Pass thumbs over index loops, and insert into little finger loops from below. Return with (double) near little finger strings.

5. Bend indexes down over (double) palmar strings, and into their own loops from above. Release little fingers, and give indexes a half-twist away from you and up.

A close inspection shows that Jayne's figures 849 ("Po; Darkness") and 850 ("E-ke-pe-ki; Ace of Spades") are identical, differing only in the tension of the strings.

Ko-he

This figure is a continuation of the above.

6. Release left index and right thumb, but do not draw tight.

7. Insert left index, middle, ring, and little fingers from below into left thumb loop, and remove left thumb. At the same time, pass right middle, ring, and little fingers over far right index strings, and into right index loop from above. Remove the right index, and re-insert it from the other direction, beside the other right-hand fingers. Straighten index fingers and draw tight.

By rotating the hands from side to side, the central diamond can be made to open and close.

In [Dickey 1928], this figure is called hoku ("Star"), "Spider," or kohe ekemu ("Embrace Me").
